(2024)In this project, I embark on a journey to reconnect with my body, particularly with my gut—which I approach as an assemblage of human and microbe. Our human existence is intricately interwoven with microbial life, a relationship crucial to survival. The diversity and vitality of our microbiome intricately shape our physical and mental well-being. Consequently, connecting with our microbiome is the key to reconnecting with our bodies. I find ways to connect with my microbiome through observing, listening, and writing. By using fermentation practice and theory as a form of active listening and collaborating with microbes, the work engages with what it means to be a holobiont, an assemblage of a host and the many other species living in or on them. This work integrates personal experiences alongside scientific research, emphasising the importance of intuitive knowledge and personal connection. In my grief, I longed for the comfort of believing she was in a better place, but I have found solace in the idea that life is cyclical. In death, we transform into something new and more-than-human. Microbes are at the centre of this transformation; they play an essential role throughout life, and continue to do so even after we die. When our hearts stop beating, they break down our bodies, returning nutrients to the earth and creating new life from what once was ours. I am particularly interested in exploring what happens to our microbiome after we die. The microbes that aided our digestion during life continue their work, breaking down our bodies and turning digestion into “Diegestion.” Through this exploration, I aim to ask what happens to our perception of death if we consider it a form of microbial reincarnation. Is it to get rid of foreign bodies? Why do we want to eliminate foreign bodies if we are intertwined with these bodies in symbiosis? The soap is shaped like the symbiotic structure of lichen: photobiont orbs intertwined in mycobiont strings. By washing your hands with this soap, you can interact with this structure of interconnectedness. Our microbiome, the microbial ecosystem in and on our body, is vital to the well-being of body and mind. Without our microbiome, we would not exist. Are we our microbes? Are our microbes us? Can we still see ourselves as individuals, considering we are a multi-species composite? Are we all lichen? While leaving traces of yourself on the soap, the soap leaves traces on your skin. Instead of using antibacterial soap, this soap benefits the microbes on your skin with its probiotic qualities, nourishing your symbiotic relationships while washing your hands. In this previous installation, the human microbiome is presented as a new form of identification. Where that study was about differentiating between individuals, this study is more intimate and questions who you are as an individual. Our microbiome, the microbial ecosystem in and on our body, is vital to the well-being of body and mind. We are so intertwined with our microbiome that we wouldn’t exist without it. Can we still see ourselves as individuals, considering this multi-species symbiosis? Are we our microbes? Are our microbes us? What does it mean to love yourself when you are a multi-species being? As an act of self-love, I ask participants to kiss themselves. We humans have created boundaries to separate ourselves from nature, living within walls and cities. We perceive each other and the world around us through screens, the content of which is directed by us. Do you notice all the shapes and patterns growing along the sidewalk as you make your way home after a long, tiresome day at work? Have you ever really looked at the texture and the shape of the sugar grains that you use in your coffee every morning? The wings of the dead fly in your windowsill? To be able to see and appreciate all the beauty the non-human world has to offer, you will have to start small. Little Phenomena will challenge the way you experience the world around you by exploring the wonders of everyday life using a microscope. Using animated microscopical footage Little Phenomena creates a hyperfocus that provides you an escape from this human-centered mindset which allows you to just be, marvel and absorb. By using controversial design, a new era of (bio) privacy will be set in motion. This study investigates and questions various ethical dilemmas in which this new form of identity creates a living mirror of our human consciousness. The LAB invites test subjects to participate in ongoing research by providing their facial microbiome. These facial prints are analysed and presented in a bio-installation open to the public. BIO-ID is a study into the future design of human bio-identity. Learning about the ingenuity of other organisms and whole ecosystems is incredibly fascinating to her. Her work explores the overlooked and makes these realms more noticeable for human beings. Karenina believes that being more consciously aware of our non-human surroundings can be a great start to transcend our anthropocentric views. It’s hard to care about something when we do not notice it.
